On this hike, we will explore the geologic processes, stretching back over 500 million years, that have created the Plateau and shaped today’s special landscape. Bill will use concepts and language comfortable for the non-scientist and will discuss how geology, some of it ancient and some much more recent, has determined the character and appearance of both the broader Plateau and specifically the unique character of High Falls and the West Fork Gorge.
High Falls, the grand finale of the tour, is a 100-foot waterfall surrounded by water pools, large boulders, and plenty of exposed rock providing one of the absolute best displays of multiple geologic processes at work on the Plateau. The hike is a unique opportunity both to see these spectacular views, and to gain valuable knowledge about these ancient mountains.
This will be a moderate to difficult 1.6-mile round trip hike with a 700ft descent and ascent down/up steep rock stairs, with some wet and slippery spots, and possibly mud.
